Wait, this is important. WHY IS KATY PERRY PLAYING IN THE SECOND CLIP?
Exhibit A is from the UK airing of “Skins” season 3 with Lily Allen’s “The Fear” playing over Naomi and Emily’s first on-screen kiss. Exhibit B is from the international DVDs of “Skins” season 3 with Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” playing over Naomi and Emily’s first on-screen kiss. Fucking hell. One of the reasons, though not the only or the most important reason, that I love “Skins” is its masterful, atmospheric, seamless use of music. Those guys are good, really good. I’ll never hear The Temper Trap without seeing Emily munching half-dressed on a biscuit. Oh, not like that. People, focus. Along those same lines, I’ve admired the series for steadfastly avoiding any and all Katy Perry. I do not like Katy Perry. I particularly do not like “I Kissed a Girl.” (Though if you do, that’s cool. We can still be friends. Just watch what you play when I’m in the car with you.) But then, BOOM, Katy Perry all up in my sweet lady kisses. Also, can we just talk about how utterly cheap it is to actually play “I Kissed a Girl” over a scene where two girls are kissing? No. Uh-uh. “Skins,” you’re better than that.
Now, my friend Google tells me that the music for much of the series has been swapped out both for the international and US DVDs. It’s a little thing about music rights and let’s be perfectly honest – money. The same thing happened with the long (long, long, really fucking long) awaited “Daria” DVDs. But, Jesus, it’s jarring. The one bit of good news? It’s not Katy Perry on the US DVDs. Instead we get the totally obscure “Kissed in the Rain” by Moonlight Crush. Still, just knowing a version with “I Kissed a Girl” is out there, haunting our world…it’s just…shiver. Though, fear not, you can listen to either version on mute and still be blissfully, ignorantly, deliriously happy.
